Critique Clinic – November 18-20, 2011

How does it work? For three days a week (Friday-Sunday midnight), I will open the clinic to any artist who wants an honest peer review and critique of a card which gets plenty of clicks but no sales, so something’s probably not quite right, or you’ve got a new design you want to test drive, or you’re unsure about the marketability of a card. Or perhaps you’re a newbie who isn’t sure if a recently submitted card is up to a marketable standard. Anyone is welcome to participate. In fact, I encourage everyone to at least look at the cards in question and read the critique comments – you may learn something. The purpose of the clinic is to help artists improve the commercial appeal and marketability of their cards.
THE RULES
- ONE card per artist only.
- Card must be for sale at Greeting Card Universe.
- We will take an unlimited number of artists, including those who have submitted recently, HOWEVER I reserve the right to close a clinic for the day if the submissions become overwhelming. If the clinic has been closed, and you submit a card, your comment will be deleted.
- To submit a card for critique, post a link to the card at GCU in the comments section of this clinic post.
- Any artist is free to comment and/or give a critique of a submitted card. HOWEVER, post-and-run comments like “great card” or “you suck” will not be tolerated, nor will abuse. Criticism should be constructive, not destructive. Play nice or you will be banned.
- I also won’t tolerate temper tantrums if you decide your “artistic integrity” is being stepped on because you asked for a critique, and someone told you the photo you’re using isn’t in focus. If you can’t take honest criticism, don’t submit. Once gets you a warning; twice and you’re banned from submitting in the future.
- Artists who critique may do so by giving their opinion, posting an example of another card, or pointing the submitter to a video, on-line article, or other helpful suggestion.
- Don’t forget that artists who are giving you tips and helpful advice are volunteering their time and trouble. Be nice. A link back to their store on your website or blog is appreciated (but not mandatory).
- You are free not to take any advice offered. There’s no guarantee any card will be a bestseller, so don’t come into the clinic with unrealistic expectations.
- Rules may change as we go along and we see how things turn out, okay?
So without any further ado, I declare this week’s Critique Clinic open!

Here is a new Christmas card I did, Just wondering if it’s too plain.. It was just approved couple days ago.

Thanks,
Donna Collins
I don’t think it’s too plain… I think it’s charming.
Thank you Corrie…I was thinking of adding a bird, but I won’t now…
Donna Collins
Hi, I have the very same question on my latest holiday approval. Just wondering if it is too plain. Any other critique of course is welcome!

It is a simple design, but it’s effective, conveys the holiday message, and it has modern appeal. I wouldn’t mess around with it too much if I were you.
Corrie
Hi Betsy, I love this design…..Have you tried making the tree swirls using green lines..I bet it would look good with green lines too. Then you would have two different cards..
Donna Collins
Thanks Corrie and Donna, I appreciate the feedback. Donna, thanks for the color suggestion! By the way I do think your snowman card is very nice as is.
I tried leaving a reply but it didn’ go through so I will try again.
I would like to know if this Valentines Day card is saleable?

Terry
Hi Terry, what if you used a creamy white background instead of black and of course the font letters would be black..It’s a cute photo card.
Donna Collins
Terry, it looks slightly unbalanced to me. The cupid and the flowers should be the same distance from the centerpiece. It jars on the eye if you know what I mean!
Nice cards in the clinic, today! I love Betsy’s tree (VERY pretty, Betsy!), Donna’s snowman is as sweet as can be, and Terry’s valentine is quite elegant (although, Terry, if I were to make one suggestion, it would be to move the center heart with the photo just a little closer to the roses or else move the roses a little closer to the photo heart, to balance the whole picture – otherwise I like it).
Ok, here’s my submission this week. I have a purple penguin card, but I turned his fur black for this version to make him slightly more realistic (although he’s a cartoon, so it may not even matter – lol!). And this card is in my private gallery while I wait for the public version to be approved. Anyhow, my main question is this: is the text ok (including the humor)? Also, any other suggestions are appreciated. 🙂

Thanks!
Cindy
Hi Cindy, thanks for the compliment.I love your little penguin but am not sure about the puck pun on the front being for a child. Maybe it is just me. I am curious to hear from others. I think the text looks great with the picture tho. I also like your inner saying.
BETSY! Get your mind out of the gutter! It was a pun on “yucking” (like yucking it up)! Ha ha ha…I’m teasing you. You had it right, it’s on the ‘f-word’ because I like to be obnoxious sometimes. 🙂 And who better to be obnoxious with than hockey fans? 😉 Lol! But you’re right, it doesn’t belong in a category for kids. I might change the inner verse so that it doesn’t sound childish (because the way that it is now, it probably does). 🙂 Otherwise it’s a clever pun on the front of the card, right? Lol! (just kidding again)
Thanks!
Cindy 🙂
I agree – if you’re going to use the “pucking” pun – which is good, btw – I’d save that for adults. Okay, most kids these days have heard that and worse, but it’s their older relatives who’ll be buying the birthday card, so I’d tone it down a bit.
Something to consider – the illustration is so definitely child oriented (and cute), I question whether it would work as an adult birthday card. I can’t see myself buying that card for a grown man, for example. A woman, okay, but it doesn’t strike me as “butch” enough for a guy.
Corrie
You’re too funny Cindy!
Hey, how about if I put it in the Canada Day category? That’s not for kids, but nor does it need to be butch, right? 🙂
I might try to make my cutsie penguin a bit manlier, but not sure how that’s going to turn out. I could take the curl off the top of his head, remove the pink cheeks and give him a moustache, and perhaps I could add a little ‘bulge’ between his little legs/feet? 😉
Cindy
OMG, I just realized if I make the ‘bulge’ between his legs/feet bigger and more prominent, it will go SO well with the pun about having a pucking good time!!! Oh, and I could put it in birthday>>fraternity brothers! Wow! That might just work! Sometimes I can manage to get right to the ‘point’, eh? Lol! (Tongue-in-cheek.) Lol.
Here’s another Christmas one with snowman, child and Bird, lots of clicks but no sales yet.
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/holiday-cards/christmas-cards/for-my-teacher/seasons-greetings-for-teacherchild-and-851506?aid=140624
Nice card, I love their expressions and the little bird is cute!
They do seem to be disappearing off the bottom of the card. Do you think it would be better not to cut the boy off at the knees? Maybe have a thin strip of snow between them and the bottom on the card to give them something to stand on.
Visitors gone…have altered card, now they have something to stand on (in?), Thanks a lot for the input, it does look better.
I find the font doesn’t harmonize with the rest of the design – it’s too high, it’s too formal, and the red color is disappearing into the blue (a darker red would stand out better. Norma’s right – by cutting off the kid and the snowman at the bottom of the card, you’ve lost balance. I also find it slightly disturbing that the snowman has no arms, but that’s maybe something you can’t fix. Lastly, add “to my teacher” on the front of the card – that will have more appeal to folks looking for a specialized card.
Corrie
Thanks Corrie and Norma, will deal with it when visitors have left!!
