Critique Clinic – December 16-18, 2011

How does it work? For three days a week (Friday-Sunday midnight), I will open the clinic to any artist who wants an honest peer review and critique of a card which gets plenty of clicks but no sales, so something’s probably not quite right, or you’ve got a new design you want to test drive, or you’re unsure about the marketability of a card. Or perhaps you’re a newbie who isn’t sure if a recently submitted card is up to a marketable standard. Anyone is welcome to participate. In fact, I encourage everyone to at least look at the cards in question and read the critique comments – you may learn something. The purpose of the clinic is to help artists improve the commercial appeal and marketability of their cards.
THE RULES
- ONE card per artist only.
- Card must be for sale at Greeting Card Universe.
- We will take an unlimited number of artists, including those who have submitted recently, HOWEVER I reserve the right to close a clinic for the day if the submissions become overwhelming. If the clinic has been closed, and you submit a card, your comment will be deleted.
- To submit a card for critique, post a link to the card at GCU in the comments section of this clinic post.
- Any artist is free to comment and/or give a critique of a submitted card. HOWEVER, post-and-run comments like “great card” or “you suck” will not be tolerated, nor will abuse. Criticism should be constructive, not destructive. Play nice or you will be banned.
- I also won’t tolerate temper tantrums if you decide your “artistic integrity” is being stepped on because you asked for a critique, and someone told you the photo you’re using isn’t in focus. If you can’t take honest criticism, don’t submit. Once gets you a warning; twice and you’re banned from submitting in the future.
- Artists who critique may do so by giving their opinion, posting an example of another card, or pointing the submitter to a video, on-line article, or other helpful suggestion.
- Don’t forget that artists who are giving you tips and helpful advice are volunteering their time and trouble. Be nice. A link back to their store on your website or blog is appreciated (but not mandatory).
- You are free not to take any advice offered. There’s no guarantee any card will be a bestseller, so don’t come into the clinic with unrealistic expectations.
- Rules may change as we go along and we see how things turn out, okay?
So without any further ado, I declare this week’s Critique Clinic open!

Here is a card for Grandad age 66….It was a fast track request…. Was wondering if I should have put the age on front of card?

Donna Collins
Yes, if I were you, I’d put something like “Happy 66th Birthday, Granddad (yes, the proper spelling has a double ‘d’ in it).
Corrie
OMG, thanks Corrie… I thought I put a double ‘D’… I’ll make changes…..
Thanks so much…and it would sound better with the 66th on the front of card….
Donna
Hi everyone,
I am sort of new to GCU. I have this card at my store for a while but never made a sale. Love to hear what you guys think.

Thanks!

I am sorry looks like there is a space after the word …happy-holidays/… on my previous post.
Hi Suticha!
Very unusual sculptural look on your cards. I don’t know how much you can manipulate the original image, but if the figures were a bit bigger so the detail was more easily appreciated, that might help.
Corrie
Hi Corrie,
I shot the photos at high resolution. Definitely can make them bigger. 🙂
Suticha
Hi Suticha! Love the little sculptures. I think it would be a more interesting design if they weren’t all lined up. If it’s possible to re-do with some sort of interaction going on and possibly moving the gift or one of the figures to the foreground, you may find yourself with a more interesting card. Happy Holidays!
Hi Suticha! See great place for input isn’t it? Well, this is a photograph so your manipulation is limited without a re-shoot or unless you are very good at Photoshop. Here’s my feeling. As a photograph it’s fine, as a greeting card it’s fine. Nice clean, simple look which many people like. As stated in your artist notes, you have others in this series which are interacting and varied with snowfall on black backgrounds, also nice. I don’t think you need to change the card at all. You’ve only been with GCU since July this year, so your store is just now being found by search engines. You only have 9 cards in your store so people have to find those 9 among the nearly 500,000 cards on the site. If I were you, I would concentrate on getting many more great quality greeting cards in my store and make sure I do a little marketing of my cards – and remember – stores that are left untouched, even for a week, will be bypassed by the search engine crawlers and fall farther down the search listings.
Good Luck! Doreen
Thank you very much for your encouragement, Doreen. Oh, man I have to admit it’s really hard to produce a new card on weekly basis with a full-time job. (^^!) But I’ll try my best. 🙂
Suticha
Hi Laura,
I still have the santa and the reindeer. Maybe I play with them a bit this long weekend and see if I can come up with a better composition. Oops…then that would be for X’mas next year . 😛
Thanks~
Suticha
Suticha, What lovely figures! I love the shot but it would be even better with a miniature Christmas tree or just a few other Christmassy things behind to set more of a mood. Another way would be to just have Santa in a chair with the reindeer on all 4 wearing holly or sleigh bells. 🙂 I like the suggestion of putting a sky behind with snowflakes. Dark twilight sky with stars or a single star would also be great.
I want to encourage you to continue submitting cards even if it is off season because customers know what they like and can buy them any time. 😉

Hi Corrie,
This is the card I made just a couple of weeks back. A Peer Review on this would be helpful.

Thanks.

I like the photo, it has a cool, cold blue atmosphere. Mind you, I’m not a photographer, so there may be technical issues I’m not getting. What I can tell you is that the text isn’t doing justice. I can see where you’re trying to go, but text manipulation doesn’t always work very well. You’d be better off not trying to follow the line with your text, and just putting it up in a nice place (composition wise) above the center of the card.
Corrie
The photograph on the left side of the image has poor focus which is emphasized because of the location and angle of the text which brings the viewers eye to that side of the image rather than follow through the image and see the train. I have to agree with Corrie the text doesn’t work in color or placement. Your idea is nice, but just doesn’t quite work when applied. Sometimes the message, such as this, has more impact when it’s subtle rather that load and forceful.
hahaha . . . I just read my last line ‘rather than load and forceful’ . . . OMG I need a vacation!
I meant ‘sometimes the message has more impact when it’s subtle rather than loud and ‘in your face'”
Good Morning and Happy Holidays to everyone. I just discovered that I had a nice review from Barbara on this card that I had planned on putting in the clinic so I figured no time like the present. I really like the way this design came out but I am learning that everything is subjective so am curious to hear any critique I can get.Thank you.

Betsy, I REALLY like this card – it’s very fresh and contemporary in its design, the colors pop, and it’s got a professional look that’s totally marketable. Congrats!
Corrie
Wow Corrie, thanks so much. I value your unexpected kudos greatly. You made my day!
p.s. to my last comment, I was remiss and forgot to say a big Thank You to Barbara for your kind words.
