Wanted Cards Extra: Congratulations to the Ex!
Today we highlighted three rather neglected categories in Occasions > Congratulations Cards:
- Ex Boyfriend
- Ex Girlfriend
- Ex Partner
At first glance, congratulating an ex might seem like a rather narrow occasion. But start thinking about it and suddenly there are all kinds of possibilities.
Exes graduate. They get promoted. They buy houses. They retire. They publish books, run marathons, start businesses, pass exams, get their dream jobs, and occasionally manage to assemble IKEA furniture without calling you for help.
And sometimes we’re genuinely happy for them.
So for this Wanted Cards Extra, let’s explore some different ways artists could approach these unusual categories.

Warm & Sincere
Not every breakup ends with someone’s belongings being deposited dramatically on the pavement. Plenty of former couples remain friends or simply retain affection and respect for one another.
These cards can acknowledge the changed relationship without making the breakup the main event.
Ex Boyfriend
- “We may have gone our separate ways, but I’ll always be cheering you on. Congratulations!”
- “So happy to see good things happening for you. You deserve this.”
- “Once my boyfriend, always someone I’ll be proud of. Congratulations!”
- “Life took us in different directions, but I’m genuinely happy yours brought you here.”
Ex Girlfriend
- “We shared a chapter once, and I’m so happy to see this wonderful new one beginning for you.”
- “Some people remain special even after relationships change. Congratulations!”
- “I always knew you could do amazing things. Congratulations!”
- “Our paths may have changed, but I’m still delighted to see you succeed.”
Ex Partner
This category is especially useful for cards that avoid gender or specific relationship labels.
- “Our lives took different paths, but I’ll always wish good things for you.”
- “Whatever changed between us, being proud of you didn’t.”
- “Here’s to your achievement, your next chapter, and everything still ahead.”
- “We may be part of each other’s past, but today is all about your future. Congratulations!”
Friendly Exes
Sometimes the romance disappears but the friendship survives perfectly well.
That opens the door to much more casual congratulations.
- “Look at you, doing brilliant things without me. Rude. Congratulations!”
- “Your ex officially approves of this achievement.”
- “Relationship status: over. Proud of you status: very much active.”
- “I knew you had excellent judgment. Eventually.”
- “Turns out breaking up didn’t stop me from being ridiculously proud of you.”
- “From someone who knew you when… CONGRATULATIONS!”
- “Exes can still say WELL DONE. So… well done!”
- “Consider this your official congratulatory message from the Department of Former Relationships.”

The Awkward Ex
And then there is that gloriously uncomfortable territory where sending a card to an ex is itself part of the joke.
Artists who enjoy quirky humor could have great fun here.
- “Congratulations! See? We CAN communicate like normal adults.”
- “I wasn’t sure whether exes send congratulations cards. Apparently we do now.”
- “This is not an attempt to get back together. You just did something awesome.”
- “Don’t panic. It’s only a congratulations card.”
- “No hidden meaning. No emotional baggage. Just… congratulations!”
- “I spent twenty minutes wondering whether sending this would be weird. Anyway, congratulations!”
- “Congratulations from your favorite ex.*
*Ranking may be disputed.” - “Look at us, being mature and emotionally well-adjusted. Congratulations!”
- “I promise this card does not require a relationship status update.”
The Slightly Sarcastic Ex
For relationships where friendly teasing is still very much alive:
- “Congratulations! Apparently leaving me was only the SECOND best decision you ever made.”
- “I always said you’d go far. Admittedly, I meant away from me.”
- “Congratulations on your success. I’ll be taking partial credit.”
- “You did it! And without my constant helpful advice. Astonishing.”
- “Congratulations from the person who already knew how annoyingly talented you are.”
- “Another impressive achievement. Your ego must be unbearable by now.”
- “Well, well, well. Look who turned out to be successful.”
- “I knew you were destined for greatness. We just weren’t destined for each other.”
Congratulations on a New Job or Promotion
This could be one of the most natural reasons to congratulate an ex.
- “New job. New adventures. Same annoyingly talented you.”
- “Congratulations on the promotion! I always knew you were going places.”
- “Your career is clearly making better decisions than our relationship did.”
- “Congratulations on the new job! Go show them what I already know you can do.”
- “They hired you? Excellent choice. I’ve always said you interview well.”

Congratulations on a New Home
There’s plenty of scope here too, especially for couples who once lived together.
- “Congratulations on your new home and your exciting new chapter.”
- “New keys. New address. New adventures. Congratulations!”
- “Congratulations on the new place! May nobody ever argue with you about the thermostat.”
- “Your own place! Decorate it however you like. Finally.”
- “Congratulations on the new home. I promise not to leave anything in the bathroom cabinet.”
Graduation, Qualifications & Personal Achievements
These work particularly well for exes who remained friends.
- “You worked incredibly hard for this. Congratulations!”
- “I knew you could do it then, and I know it now. Congratulations!”
- “Our relationship may be history, but your future looks brilliant.”
- “Congratulations! Proud of you then. Proud of you now.”
- “You did it! Your ex is officially impressed.”
New Beginnings
Not every congratulations card needs to name the achievement. A flexible “new chapter” design could work for many situations.
- “Here’s to new beginnings and exciting things ahead.”
- “One chapter ended. Another amazing one begins.”
- “Life moves on. Look where yours is taking you!”
- “Here’s to whatever wonderful thing comes next.”
- “Past: complicated. Future: looking pretty damn good.”
- “Whatever comes next, I hope it’s fantastic.”
And Then There’s the Elephant in the Room…
There is one congratulations occasion involving an ex that deserves especially careful handling:
their new relationship, engagement, or marriage.
For some former couples, that could be completely sincere.
- “So happy you found your person. Congratulations to you both.”
- “Wishing you both every happiness in this wonderful new chapter.”
- “Life took us down different roads, and I’m so glad yours led you here.”
But humor could take this into wonderfully dangerous territory:
- “Congratulations on finding someone who puts up with you!”
- “You’re getting married! I knew one of us would eventually figure relationships out.”
- “Congratulations to the happy couple! And yes, I really mean it.”
- “You found The One! Turns out it wasn’t me. Awkward.”
- “Congratulations on your engagement. Your references apparently checked out.”
These will certainly not suit every ex-relationship, but that is precisely why having different card choices matters.

Design Possibilities
The artwork doesn’t necessarily need to scream BREAKUP! Broken hearts and ripped photographs could work for humorous designs, but subtler imagery may make these cards much more versatile.
Think separate paths leading toward a sunrise, closing one book and opening another, new doors, growing plants, butterflies, roads and signposts, champagne, trophies, stars, graduation caps, houses, office imagery, or simple contemporary typography.
For humorous cards, however, artists could have fun with crossed-out hearts, relationship-status graphics, awkward stick figures, discarded couple photographs, “EX” stamps, warning labels, fake official certificates, or mock legal documents.
The important thing is tone. An ex-congratulations card can be affectionate without being romantic, funny without being cruel, and sentimental without suggesting the sender wants the relationship back.
There’s a surprising amount of emotional territory hiding inside these three nearly empty categories.
After all, sometimes “we didn’t work out” and “I’m happy for you” can both be true.
Happy Designing!
