Nuts and Bolts: Inside Verse Considerations * Line Breaks

August 4, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – Inside Verse Considerations * Line Breaks

Another important consideration with inside verse alignment is where the line breaks fall. Here are some considerations and tricks for appropriate line breaks.
Line breaks, the point at which two lines of text are split, are ideally at the end of a sentence however this is not always possible and a break can happen mid sentence.  It is important for you to manually adjust line breaks so they fall logically within the sentence. You can add these manually with the <enter/return> key or better known as carriage return for us old school typewriter users.

It is best to adjust your line breaks after you have finalized the content of your inside verse as well as finalized the font style and size. After these are final then you should inspect your verse and adjust with manually line breaks if necessary.  The main considerations should be maintaining a logical and natural flow of the meaning of the sentence as well as balanced line length.

BALANCED LINE LENGTH
Easy to eyeball lines about the same length.

Not balanced:
Happy Birthday to the
best Mom.

Balanced:
Happy Birthday to the best Mom.
OR
Happy Birthday
to the best Mom.

LOGICAL BREAKS
Often finding the right place to continue a sentence on the following line is where you find a natural pause in the sentence or thought.

Not Natural Breaks:

Here is a good reference and tips for How to Break Lines.

TIP: sometimes it takes reading the verse out loud to yourself to hear where the natural breaks and pauses are
within a sentence. Re-read outloud after manual line breaks to hear if it makes sense and flows naturally.

Wanted New Cards: Male Friendship Cards

August 3, 2017

Wanted Cards – Male Friendship Cards

Friends come in all shapes, sizes, ages and genders.  Why do we usually think of girls or women that are friends?  Men have friends too!  They may not meet for tea, yoga and chat time, or maybe they do?  Maybe they meet for a beer, some heavy lifting at the gym, and watch a sports game together.  No matter what they do, there’s one thing for sure, they rely on and enjoy the company of one another just like female friends do.

Please consider creating cards to celebrate a good bromance!

We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using the Stock Cards function (Bigstock) or your own graphic designs.

Remember, when you’re submitting your new card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers. Be inventive,  be clever, be creative. Go for it!

Dash of Inspiration: August 2017 Design Challenge

August 1, 2017
  • DashInspirationBanner_2015

The judging is in-process for last month’s first Big Stock Challenge and hope you had fun with that twist. Let’s get to this month’s challenge with another twist. We’ve had you pick idioms in past challenges and this month, we chose ONE idiom for all entrants to use in their design.

……………………………………………………………

Theme: Tickled Pink

Requirements:

  • Tickled Pink – the idiom –  must be part of the message of your new creation. Phrases.org defines it as: “It’s the figurative sense of the word that means ‘to give pleasure or gratify’. The tickling pink concept is of enjoyment great enough to make the recipient glow with pleasure.”
  • Blank verse will not be considered for entry in this challenge.

……………………………………………………………

Entry Deadline: Thursday, August 31st

……………………………………………………………

How to Enter: Post the PID (card number) and the URL (public storefront link – please WAIT for the card to be available in the public marketplace, please DO NOT post a link to your Manage Cards area) as a post in the challenge blog. We’ll forward your entry to the jury.

……………………………………………………………….

Category:

Any category that is well-suited for your Tickled Pink design.

…………………………………………………………….

  • Submissions must be NEW, no existing designs.
  • Your entry must meet the Challenge Requirements and Theme or it will not be included in the challenge.
  • Stock Card Creations entries will not be accepted.
  • Your designs should differ from those already offered in the category of your choice to offer shoppers a variety of choices, not more of the same.

……………………………………………………………………

BLIND Judging: We hope each of you enters every month. Entries are submitted anonymously for judging by the GCU Challenge Jury which means that before and during the challenge, judges do not have any way of knowing what artist is behind each entry. This eliminates any and all concerns with ‘favoritism’. Results will post on the Community Blog. The jury will judge the entries on the following criteria:

  • How well the card meets the Challenge Requirements and Theme.
  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.
  • Creativity, Execution and Marketability.

Nuts and Bolts: Inside Verse Considerations * Alignment

July 28, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – Inside Verse Considerations * Alignment

Continuing from last week’s Nuts & Bolts – Inside Verse Considerations

You should give consideration to the alignment and spacing of your inside verse.  You have three controls:  message alignment, vertical alignment and line spacing. Overall the alignment and spacing should be pleasing to the eye in flow, balance, and easily legible.  In general, the default settings are usually best however there are some exceptions like invitation inside text and a few others.  Below we have addressed an important one that often goes overlooked, overlapping text.

Overlapping Text:
Depending on the front style chosen, sometimes text from an upper line overlaps text on a lower line. This specifically can happen when a font’s descenders from the upper line happen to fall into the space of ascenders from the lower line. In any case, they overlap and it’s hard to read.  When and if this happens you can either change the font style, add or remove text or the simple fix is to adjust the line spacing allowing more space in between the lines. Voila!  No more overlapping.

Nuts Bolts – Inside Verse Considerations Alignment01a

TIP: another important issue with inside verse alignment is where the line breaks fall. Ideally the line breaks occur at the end of a sentence but this rarely happens. There are some considerations and tricks that we will share in next week’s Nuts & Bolts on Inside Verse Considerations * Line Breaks.

Nuts and Bolts: Inside Verse Considerations

July 21, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – Inside Verse Considerations

Creating a fitting verse that captures the sentiment of your design and the occasion is hard enough but it doesn’t end there. The font style, size, color, and alignment (vertical and horizontal) are all important considerations that are within your control.

Choose the best match to the font, design, color, style, mood and occasion of the cover design. It is also important to keep in mind the gender and age of the card recipient.

Here is an article on the Submission Guideline – Typography: Font Choice that has some good tips for choosing a font style for a cover design many of which apply to inside verses too.

TIP: LEGIBILITY – Some fonts do odd things – odd kerning or characters ,like apostrophes, that you cannot control and may not be ideal to use for an inside verse. Be sure to look at each character in your inside verse and change the font style if needed.
