Custom Corner: Business Logos

June 7, 2017

Custom Corner – Business Logos

Branding is very important for businesses. Not only does it help customers and clients identify a company by their brand (recognition) but also differentiates their goods & services from their competitors. Every time a brand is mentioned or seen, represented by a logo, the brand is reinforced in people’s minds.

Offering custom products for businesses is important. The more tailored the product is to their line of work or industry and incorporating their logo, the more attractive the product.

Popular greeting cards for businesses outside of Christmas, New Year’s and Chinese New Year’s are Thank You for your Business cards, Happy Birthday Cards, and surprisingly, patriotic holiday cards like Memorial Day and Independence Day cards.

Here is a recent custom request to incorporate a business logo for GCU artist PamJArts.
Shopper request:
I would like to add our logo to the front of the truck above the windshield or on the door or both

Truckloads of kudos to Pamela on a job well done!  Thank you for delighting the shopper and differentiating GCU from other online card companies.
Here is a related read with some good tips: Nuts & Bolts – Design for Business Logos

A few additional tips:
1. be sure to watch your Manage Custom Requests and reply promptly
2. when submitting a variation on an approved card add a Note to Reviewer with the approved card’s product id number (“custom request based on pid#12345”)
3. if you have incorporated the shopper’s logo or company name in the design be sure to submit the card to your Private Gallery

Dash of Inspiration: June 2017 Design Challenge

June 2, 2017
  • DashInspirationBanner_2015

The judging is in-process for last month’s first Big Stock Challenge and hope you had fun with that twist. We plan on having more of those interspersed throughout the year. This month we have a ‘mountain of fun’ planned – where everything goes if you can speak to the theme …

Theme: Mountain(s)

Requirements:

  • Mountain must be clear in your imagery/verse combination. For example: A large pile of incoming or outgoing mail would not be accepted without a matching verse to tie in, such as; “a mountain of mail”. Mountain lions, mountain climbers, mountain bikes, etc. are all acceptable as long as it’s a strong tie verse, occasion, and recipient.  We want you to “make a mountain out of a molehill” by creating something unique and marketable!
  • Blank verse will not be considered for entry in this challenge.

For inspiration and examples to get your creativity flowing look for Public Domain quotes, scripture and of course there are always idioms. Remember GCU will only accept biblical quotes from bibles clearly stated to be in the public domain. Place this information in the Notes to Reviewer. For your assistance: The King James Bible and the World English Bible are both in the public domain but you are not limited to these two versions. You may use other bible versions as long as the url link clearly shows that they are in the public domain.

……………………………………………………………

Entry Deadline: Friday, June 30th

……………………………………………………………

How to Enter: Post the PID (card number) and the URL (public storefront link – please WAIT for the card to be available in the public marketplace, please DO NOT post a link to your Manage Cards area) as a post in the challenge blog. We’ll forward your entry to the jury.

……………………………………………………………….

Category:

Any category that is well-suited for mountain themed card.

…………………………………………………………….

Rules:

  • Submission must meet GCU’s Submission Guidelines and be Approved through the usual Review Cycle– Fast Track your submission with this in the Notes to Reviewer: June Design Challenge Submission here is the link to the blog post: (include THIS blog post URL)
  • Only ONE card per artist per challenge.
  • Submissions must be NEW, no existing designs.
  • Your entry must meet the Challenge Requirements and Theme or it will not be included in the challenge.
  • Stock Card Creations entries will not be accepted.
  • Your designs should differ from those already offered in the category of your choice to offer shoppers a variety of choices, not more of the same.

……………………………………………………………………

BLIND Judging: We hope each of you enters every month. Entries are submitted anonymously for judging by the GCU Challenge Jury which means that before and during the challenge, judges do not have any way of knowing what artist is behind each entry. This eliminates any and all concerns with ‘favoritism’. Results will post on the Community Blog. The jury will judge the entries on the following criteria:

  • How well the card meets the Challenge Requirements and Theme.
  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.
  • Creativity, Execution and Marketability.

……………………………………………………………………

Winners: 1st Place:

  • The winning designer’s card and store will be featured on the GCU Public Blog the blog which customers view and follow.
  • As well as featured on the GCU Public Facebook Page nearly 46,000 followers, now THAT’S exposure!
  • The winning card will be Design of the Day following the announcement of the winners (within 48-hours).

EXCEPTION: Horizontal (landscape) cards may not be featured as DOD due to GCU Home Page space restrictions. In these cases, GCU will choose a different vertically oriented card from your store to feature as DOD. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for this limitation.

  • The winning card will be added to the Greeting Card Universe Design Challenge Winners Pinterest Board – currently GCU’s Pinterest Page followers: 2K!
  • The winning card, should the artist choose, may be referenced in a new series by the winning artist and he/she may Fast Track all cards in the new series (being sure to give the Challenge URL and winning card PID in your Notes to Reviewer for each card in this series).
  • Winning card will be included in a marketing email to over 100,000 customers!
  • NEW starting this month, GCU will create a Meet the Team board for the winning artist under the Pinterest GCU account where the winning artist will be able to pin and promote her own storefront and all that makes them a unique card designer and one of GCU’s artistic community team member.
  • Winning card will be posted on GCU’s Instagram with 2,000 followers and counting!

Wanted New Cards: Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

June 2, 2017

Wanted Cards – Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

GCU has become a destination for unique cultural holiday cards that can’t be found in the greeting card stores.

Here is a new category that is in need of cards.

As with all occasions and holidays that you are not familiar with, please take the time to research to make sure your designs and verses are appropriate and will resonate with shoppers.
If you do not feel a strong connection or understanding with the holiday or occasion please do not create cards for it.

We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using the Stock Cards function (Bigstock) or your own graphic designs.

Remember, when you’re submitting your new card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers. Be inventive,  be clever, be creative. Go for it!

Nuts and Bolts: Breaking the Rules, Punctuation

May 30, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – Breaking the Rules, Punctuation

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” – Pablo Picasso

Our card reviewers may seem like real sticklers for the rules, especially punctuation. Why? Nothing screams “unprofessional” louder than grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. However, sometimes in the spirit of artistic license and expression, the rules need to be flexible. GCU has established some exceptions to hard and fast rules to allow for creative composition.

Here is one example:

On the Inside Verse, the standard punctuation rules apply;
A comma is needed if all on one line: Happy Birthday, Grandma
A comma IS needed if on two or multiple lines:
Happy Birthday,
Grandma
A comma would not be needed in this case: Happy Birthday to my Grandma.

We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using the Stock Cards function (Bigstock) or your own graphic designs.

Nuts and Bolts: PayPal Payment Method

May 19, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – PayPal Payment Method

There is only one day that trumps payday. The day you actually receive your pay! GCU pays artists on a quarterly basis (payments are issued within 30 days after the end of each quarter). GCU sends artists’ payments via mailed check or PayPal. GCU strongly encourages artists to set-up a PayPal account and set their preferred Payment Method in their GCU account to PayPal for a handful of reasons:

1. no transaction fees (GCU pays them)
2. instantaneous receipt
3. online deposit – transfer your funds directly to your financial institution
4. avoid mailing address & deliver errors
5. natural disasters – rain, wind, sleet, spilled wine … we’ve seen it all. Some checks take the scenic route, really take a beating needing to be re-issued (means you have to wait even longer)

See this related post about earnings and payments.

Note: if you are puzzled why you have not received your payment via PayPal, double check in your GCU Account Information that you entered your PayPal account email address correctly.  Also, this sounds so simple but it’s worth saying, you MUST set up a PayPal account in order to receive payments.

Nuts and Bolts: Give Your Low to No Sellers a Facelift

Nuts & Bolts – Give Your Low to No Sellers a Facelift

Do you have some cards that have been hanging around for a while with low to no sales? Putting a fresh touch on low performing cards that you’re not 100% happy with is a good idea.
Here is a recently updated card by GCU artist Stephanie Laird:

Here are some tips:
https://gcucommunity.com/2013/10/01/tips-and-tricks-updating-old-card-designs/

And a helpful posting on when to edit an existing card vs starting from scratch:
https://gcucommunity.com/2016/04/29/nuts-and-bolts-change-or-new-submission/

TIP: Changing the image of an approved card does carry some risk as the review team does not give it a once over.  If you are changing images on approved cards you are welcome to send an email to the review team with a list of pid#s and ask them for a review.  A second set of eyes never hurts.  If intending to update a like-image collection we suggest you update only one card first and have the review team give it a review before proceeding with the balance.  This will save you time and grief in case your edits to not meet the Submission Guidelines.

Nuts & Bolts – Stock Card Creations Tab

Stock Card Creations is a simple concept and relatively simple tool, however there are many tricks, rules and nuances that can throw you for a loop if you’re not in the know.

We have added a Stock Creations page here on the GCU Community Blog, snuggled right up next to the Artist Resources in the header.  We’ve collected all the great tips and tricks from blog posts in one place so you can read up on using this creative tool and making the most of it.

This will be particularly helpful if you have not used Stock Creations before and would like to submit and entry into May’s Design Challenge which is a Stock Card Creations only challenge.
