……………………………………………………………

Theme: State of Mine

Create a design which is representative of known ‘facts’ such as; state bird, state flower, state landmark or scenic, etc.

Requirements:

  • Use at least 3 elements which are representative of the state you live in – if living outside of the  United States, the land, province, country or equivalent works perfectly too.
  • Imagery must be included for the three elements.
  • Your card’s message, text/verse must also speak to an appropriate category – blank cards will be disqualified.

Important Notes:

  • If you choose to use a quote it must be written before 1923 thus in Public Domain or from unknown author. As with the use of 3rd party elements, be sure to include a link to where the quote shows public domain status. A quote is not a requirement of this challenge.
  • We caution you against using emblems, flags, landmarks and symbols which may have Intellectual Property ties.

To get you started …

For USA based artists this link will be helpful: USA State Symbols

Living outside the USA, these links will help you get started:

BLIND Judging: We hope each of you enters every month. Entries are submitted anonymously for judging by the GCU Challenge Jury which means that before and during the challenge, judges do not have any way of knowing what artist is behind each entry. This eliminates any and all concerns with ‘favoritism’. Results will post on the Community Blog. The jury will judge the entries on the following criteria:

  • How well the card meets the Challenge Requirements and Theme.
  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.
  • Creativity, Execution and Marketability.

Nuts and Bolts: International Artists – New W-8BEN Form

May 27, 2016

Nuts & Bolts – International Artists – NEW W-8BEN Form

The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), enacted in 2010, became effective on July 1, 2014.  Because of the FATCA, the Form W-8BEN that you previously completed in order for GCU to process your artist payments will no longer be valid.  As FATCA now requires GCU to report your birth date and/or your  foreign tax identification number on your annual Form 1042-S, we have to ask all foreign artists to complete the new Form W-8BEN that was revised in 2014 to collect this additional information.  The form is essentially the same as the one that you provided to GCU previously except that it asks for additional personal information in Part 1 in order to meet the new reporting requirements for Form 1042-S.  This becomes effective in 2017, but GCU wants to start collecting the information now so that we are prepared to file the Form 1042’s next year and artists will not experience delays in receiving payments.

Download the W-8BEN Form here X.

Please send the completed form to susan@bigdates.com.

Graduation season is here, an exciting time for high school seniors and their families.  Many schools host a celebratory grad night event which offers grads a safe and sober venue and typically concludes in the wee hours of the morning.  Chaperones who volunteer their time at this event deserve a big thank you!

Occasions >> Thank You >> Chaperone / Chaperoning >> Grad Night

Nuts and Bolts: Custom Requests

May 20, 2016

GCU sees a lot of Customer Custom Design Requests that go unanswered by artists. These are the requests that shoppers send to artists for a specific card via the painter’s pallet icon  Inline image 1.  These requests have been confirmed by the shopper which means their validity and rate of conversion (sale) are high.  If you are able to fulfill their request satisfactorily, these shoppers prove to be repeat customers for both you and GCU.
Artists will see these requests by one of two means:

1. Email sent to You

from:
artistservices@greetingcarduniverse.com
titled for example:
GCU Custom Request #10422 – PID #1374480

or follow up communications from the shopper titled for example:
Message re: Custom Card Request #10454

2. In your Administrative Tools as  Manage Custom Requests

The first steps you should take are to review the request and then decide and let the shopper know if you accept or decline their request.

A few TIPS:
Since there are often email deliver-ability issues it is wise to check the tool periodically to make sure you have not overlooked any requests.

Do NOT “reply” to the custom request emails as these replies go to GCU and not the requesting shopper.  Please use the link in the email that will take you to your Manage Custom Request page and use the Contact Requester link.

Since it can take up to 24 hours for new cards to show up on the site see this trick to send a link to a new card to share with your shopper:
