This is GCU’s annual “Best of” awards as part of the monthly Design Challenge series.  Be sure to check each month’s challenge as it may be a perfect opportunity for you to submit a design that’s been on your mind, or something totally new, getting you outside of your comfort zone or overcoming an artist’s block.

Design Challenges are run each month and announced on both the GCU community blog and GCU Design Challenge forum board.  There is still a little bit of time to enter November’s challenge, see details here.

Tip: for a design challenge, and any new card for that matter, take a look at what is currently offered in the category and do a little brainstorming to offer something DIFFERENT not just more of the same. This will help your card stand out from the crowd and offer shoppers more choices, and ultimately sales!

Here are some Design Challenge Tips from GCU artist Betsy Bush.

Wanted New Cards: Get Well from Mohs Surgery

November 16, 2023

Wanted Cards – Get Well from Mohs Surgery

Skin cancer can be very concerning and sometimes not noticed until it’s progressed. Mohs surgery is one effective way in treating and removing skin cancer on the head, neck, face and ears.  Depending on the case, it can be small and simple or in more progressed cases it can be somewhat disfiguring.

Note “Mohs” is always capitalized as in “Mohs surgery”:

The term “Mohs” refers to Dr. Frederic Mohs, Professor of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin, who developed this surgical technique in the 1930s. The technique has undergone many refinements and has come to be known as “Mohs micrographic surgery” or simply “Mohs surgery” in honor of Dr. Mohs.

Please consider creating uplifting get well cards from someone who has undergone Mohs surgery. These cards should go here:

Occasions >> Get Well / Feel Better >> Mohs Surgery  cid#37708

Note: cid# is the speed entry method of adding a category to your card via category id number (cid#) vs using search terms or click and hunt. See here on the blog:

To expedite the review of these cards, please check Fast Track Review on the card image details page when you create your card and add a Note for Reviewers like “for BLOG– Wanted Cards”.

Consider using Stock Card Creations to create new cards quickly. These cards are automatically set for expedited review so no need to Fast Track. Remember, when you’re submitting your new stock card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers.

Nuts & Bolts: Holiday Custom Request Design Change

November 10, 2023

Nuts and Bolts – Holiday Custom Request Design Change

We are nearing the holiday card ordering frenzy! Soon after Thanksgiving, shoppers are on the quest for the perfect card.  Please be sure to pay attention to your Manage Custom Requests or you could be missing out on sales.

Here is a wonderful example by GCU artist Christie Black – Creations from the Heart:

From the shopper:
Hello. Would it be possible to have the exact same card but with a pinky or purply hat and scarf. I am ordering the original card for my Nephews but would love to order for my Nieces as well but with a more feminine colour hat and scarf. Thank you so much in advance for your time.

Original Card:

card 1

Resulting Card:

card 2

See this related piece on Leveraging Designs and specifically the link to Image Use Guidelines on the Forum re: Color Variations specifically.

Big holiday kudos to Christie for making this shopper believe in the perfect card!

Tip: Remember when submitting a new card that is a variation on a previously approved card to make a note in the Notes to Reviewers the pid# that it is based on.  “Based on approved card PID #12345”.  And remember custom requested cards can be set for FastTrack review.  Just leave the reviewer a little note for that too like “for a shopper’s request #14667 ”.

Additionally, we do see a rise in shopper requests for changing the inside verse which of course they can do themselves.  See this tip on how to handle Custom Requests Inside Text.

Here are some other wonderful Holiday Custom Request Design Change examples.

Nuts & Bolts: Quoting Scripture

November 3, 2023

Nuts & Bolts – Quoting Scripture

GCU has established the following guidelines when quoting scripture:

Quotation marks should begin and end your quoting of Scripture. Quotation marks mean you are copying word for word. This is helpful as any irregular spellings are indicated as part of the quoted scripture verse and so understood by shoppers to not be a typo.

for example:
“O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” Psalm 136:1

Also, in general, please note: Psalm (singular) and not Psalms (plural) should be used unless there are more than 1 psalm being quoted.

image

If you quote scripture on your cover designs or in your inside verses, please be sure to follow these guidelines. If you have existing scripture cards, please check them for compliance and edit accordingly.
