Critique Clinic – September 2-4, 2011

September 2, 2011

How does it work? For three days a week (Friday-Sunday midnight), I will open the clinic to any artist who wants an honest peer review and critique of a card which gets plenty of clicks but no sales, so something’s probably not quite right, or you’ve got a new design you want to test drive, or you’re unsure about the marketability of a card. Or perhaps you’re a newbie who isn’t sure if a recently submitted card is up to a marketable standard. Anyone is welcome to participate. In fact, I encourage everyone to at least look at the cards in question and read the critique comments – you may learn something. The purpose of the clinic is to help artists improve the commercial appeal and marketability of their cards.

THE RULES

  • ONE card per artist only.
  • Card must be for sale at Greeting Card Universe.
  • We will take an unlimited number of artists, including those who have submitted recently, HOWEVER I reserve the right to close a clinic for the day if the submissions become overwhelming. If the clinic has been closed, and you submit a card, your comment will be deleted.
  • To submit a card for critique, post a link to the card’s details page at GCU in the comments section of this clinic post.
  • Any artist is free to comment and/or give a critique of a submitted card. HOWEVER, post-and-run comments like “great card” or “you suck” will not be tolerated, nor will abuse. Criticism should be constructive, not destructive. Play nice or you will be banned.
  • I also won’t tolerate temper tantrums if you decide your “artistic integrity” is being stepped on because you asked for a critique, and someone told you the photo you’re using isn’t in focus. If you can’t take honest criticism, don’t submit. Once gets you a warning; twice and you’re banned from submitting in the future.
  • Artists who critique may do so by giving their opinion, posting an example of another card, or pointing the submitter to a video, on-line article, or other helpful suggestion.
  • Don’t forget that artists who are giving you tips and helpful advice are volunteering their time and trouble. Be nice. A link back to their store on your website or blog is appreciated (but not mandatory).
  • You are free not to take any advice offered. There’s no guarantee any card will be a bestseller, so don’t come into the clinic with unrealistic expectations.
  • Rules may change as we go along and we see how things turn out, okay?

So without any further ado, I declare this week’s Critique Clinic open!

Bettie … I think the font on the front is too formal, more like a wedding font for this card. It could use something more casual and hand-written. The text on the inside is too small and again a completely different, yet formal font is used when something more casual suits the card better.

The blue background on the front, to me anyway, is not a color that supports the design. This blue does appear to even be in your artwork so I get the feeling of clashing. I’ll let Corrie offer better suggestions for the overall design.

In the future, to post a link here or on the forum to one of your cards. Go to your storefront. Under the card you wish to post, click on the $ sign which is the Sell this Card icon. Copy the top Text Link and paste it where you want the link.

      Best to you!

Sorry this posted in the wrong place – perhaps Corrie will delete the duplicate below…thank you!

Thanks, Doreen, for providing the correct link.

Bettie, you may want to consider removing the white frame (it’s unnecessary, and adds nothing to the overall design), and changing the orientation of your card from landscape to portrait. will help make the central cartoon image more visible. Also, as Doreen pointed out, the font is way too formal for the cartoon image; you want a casual handwriting font. Change the background color to something more sympathetic to the colors in the cartoon as well.

Thank you all for your comments. Just what type font would be considered
informal and the type I should use? Could I re do the card and re post it?I have the usual Photoshop fonts. I downloaded the ones Doreen mention last week, but could not open them…
        Thanks again,
        Bettie

There are many casual handwriting fonts out there – you need to find one that is OK for commercial use. Go to http://www.dafont.com and have a look. Be sure to check Terms of Use.

Most fonts come zipped. You have to unzip the files using a program like WinZip. I’m guessing that’s the problem. If not, tell us if you’re on Mac or PC, and what exactly you’re doing to try to install the fonts.

You can repost the card here after you make changes as long as you do it before Sunday midnight, when the Clinic closes.

This is one of my favorites. It’s also got a birthday for son and daughter version, but this gets the most hits.

      Hi Terri,

Cute artwork! I think maybe one thing that is holding this card back is the Come On text. For a birthday party, maybe you could consider something like All Aboard the Party Train, or something like that on the front to let folks know this is a party invitation.

Secondly, I personally have found that invitations sell better when you offer a place for all the information on the inside as you would find in a store when purchasing invitations. If you don’t wish to do that, then leave the inside blank so people have the right side to use for this purpose.

I’d say the focal image with the bears is great. However, I think the insipid background is letting the card down, as well as (as Doreen mentioned) the “Come One” text. I’d follow her suggestion about the text, and also choose a better, more casual or childish font. Change the background if possible – even solid white would be better.

    Hello Everyone
I’m submitting this Halloween Greeting for some critique. Any input for better creation is appreciated. Here’s the link:

Charmaine, I like the verse on the inside of the card. What you may want to take into consideration is changing that big black “boo.” Your main image is obviously hand drawn, while the “Boo” looks like a font – the two aren’t mixing well, producing a disjointed effect.

        Thank you Corrie
Yes you are correct that the images are hand drawn and the Boo is a font. I’ll modify the BOO on the front, or change the word all together and see how it goes from there.
        I appreciate your input.

      Hi Lloyd,
There is an explanation as to how to post a card from Salon of Art on this critique (a couple replies up) at the bottom of the post. I open the card like a shopper would and highlight the url (address) at the top of the browser then right click and copy. Then you can past it into this message box or where you would like it.
      Hope this was helpful.

Here is a Halloween card that I like, but the family members that I’ve shown it to don’t seem to ‘get’ my humor. :-/

    http://artist.greetingcarduniverse.com/-Halloween+No+Need+To+Get+Sucked+Into+a+Black+Hole-greeting+card-844837?aid=152495&f=1

My aim was to create something different that didn’t have a Halloween character in it. I mean, there’s already billions of Halloween cards with witches, ghosts, skeletons, black cats, etc… but how many do you see with black holes and the universe? Lol! Maybe my aim was off, though. :-/

    Thanks!

      Hi CindyJ
I’ve looked at this card before and after a minute or two of studying your design I got the idea of what you were depicting, but I did have to study it. I’m wondering if some of your stars were instead Halloween treats like candy, apples, ect. might help in that area. Your idea is unique and I like it.
      Best wishes

Thank you for taking the time to comment, Charmaine. 🙂 I added two ghosts (because that seemed like the easiest things to add – lol), but I might still add candy at some point; not sure yet.

        Thanks again,

Problem is, Cindy, shoppers WANT to have those spooky, scary elements that spell “Halloween” in people’s imaginations. Imagine a Thanksgiving card lacking turkeys, pilgrims, or even autumn leaves…it just doesn’t fly. I think your experiment doesn’t really work, but if you still don’t want to put any Halloween elements on it, I’m not sure how to save this one.

This is a painting I did yesterday. I kind of like the image but was not sure of a verse or sending occasion, so I uploaded it and made it a blank note card. I was wondering first, what any of you think of the image, and secondly, if anyone has suggestions for marketability as far as which catagories this image might work within.

      Hi John,
Your painting is a quite dark and still…a still life. A Goblin peaking around that tree might be quite cute and show some action for a Halloween card or another thought not changing the artwork you might add on the front, “Creepy Thoughts” and inside, “on a dark, still Halloween night you never know what my be lurking behind a tree…tricks or treats! Happy Halloween.

It’s a cute idea, I just find it’s very difficult to tell what the number is under the decorative elements. In the example you chose, I wouldn’t have guessed it was supposed to be a number three if I hadn’t seen that information in the card title. You may want to refine your card’s title a bit. Giving a list of attributes instead of a proper title to a card isn’t very appealing to shoppers.

    Hi Donna,
I like your concept of the dressed up number cards. On the 3 card I think I would have the border match the color of your 3 stars. Other than that I think it looks cute. Also just a heads up to check the title of your card as I believe you have left the ‘ed’ off of dressed and added a ‘t’ to in.
