Dash of Inspiration: January 2019 Design Challenge

January 3, 2019
  • DashInspirationBanner_2015

Another year about to disappear! Here’s hoping each of you had fun, learned something new and were inspired to step outside your designer’s comfort zone this year. Before we kick off January’s Challenge – I want to remind you that behind the scenes, Mindy, Nasser and the GCU team are all little elves working diligent to come up with the very best of the best that we artists brought to GCU in 2018.

Be sure to look for the Best of 2018 Founders’ Choice Awards! This time of year, our founders; Mindy and Nasser, will be choosing from ALL the cards created in 2018 – not just from challenge submissions. Winners of the 3rd Annual Founders’ Choice Awards are expected mid-to-late January, 2019.

Now it’s time to create for our first challenge of the 2019 New Year …

BLIND Judging: We hope each of you enters every month. Entries are submitted anonymously for judging by the GCU Challenge Jury which means that before and during the challenge, judges do not have any way of knowing what artist is behind each entry. This eliminates any and all concerns with ‘favoritism’. Results will post on the Community Blog. The jury will judge the entries on the following criteria:

  • How well the card meets the Challenge Requirements and Theme.
  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.
  • Creativity, Execution and Marketability.

Wanted Cards – New Year’s In Remembrance

Life without a loved one is hard enough throughout the year, but  even more so during the holidays.  Quickly on the tail of Hanukkah and Christmas comes New Year’s eve and the start of a new year.
For many, it is a difficult and emotional time with little motivation for celebration.

Please consider creating cards for New Year’s In Remembrance and the many specific subcategories (1st New Year’s alone, relationship specific, etc.):

Here are some prior and related card requests for “in remembrance” cards:

Nuts and Bolts: My and Our Variations.

December 21, 2018

Nuts & Bolts – My and Our Variations

We have seen shopper requesting term variations on cards.  This is very common when the greeting is on the cover and a relationship specific card.

For example:
Happy Birthday to Our Lovely Daughter
Happy Birthday to My Lovely Daughter

From Our Home to Yours
From My Home to Yours

There are many times when an individual is giving the card.  Not from a couple or group, for whatever reason.

When you create cards with cover text like the above examples, please consider creating a variation for both of these pronouns.  This is permitted as a differentiating word variation of a like image design (as long as the variation is on the cover).

This of course is not limited to Birthday nor Daughter.  Could be any occasion or holiday and from any other relation (my niece, our niece, my grandson, our grandson, etc.).

Here are some example by GCU artist Michael Peychich:

See this Nuts & Bolts – Leveraging Designs

TIPS:
– be sure to include the specific term in your metadata (card title, keywords, artist’s notes) to help searching shoppers find the perfect card
– add a note to the review team in the Notes to Reviews calling attention to the variation like “this design based on pid#xxxxxx with a variation for our vs my”

Wanted New Cards: Dental Award Certificate / Recognition

December 20, 2018

Wanted Cards – Dental Award Certificate / Recognition

Patient communications is an important and appreciated gesture.  Appointment reminders, birthday greetings, etc.  It is a great way for businesses to maintain and foster their relationships with the patients.

We have created a new category for Dentists to send appointment follow up cards to their patients, particularly for the youngest of patients.

Please consider creating cards for this new category:

Business >> Industry Specific >> Dental / Orthodontic >> Dental Award Certificates / Recognition

Some common “awards” or special recognition are no cavities, brave at the dentist, first dental visit, perfect checkup.

Nuts and Bolts: In-Store Pickup Offline 12/13/18 – 1/2/19

December 14, 2018

Nuts & Bolts – In-Store Pickup Offline 12/13/18 – 1/2/19

Please note that GCU will NOT be offering In-Store Pickup beginning 12/13/18 through 1/2/19.  From prior years, GCU has experienced that although shoppers may desire a same day card pickup, the quality of the finished product and service this close to the busy holiday are not acceptable and do not meet GCU’s standards.

Per usual, there are expedited shipping options available to shoppers who want to upgrade their shipping method.

We have posted a notice prominently on the site.

When communicating with shoppers, please do not recommend in-store pickup if they are in a rush but instead expedited shipping. Thank you for your understanding.
