Rainbow Connection: Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours.

October 9, 2018

Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours

First published in 1814, Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomic guide to the colors of the natural world that has been cherished by artists and scientists for more than two centuries. The beautiful pocket-size facsimile (available on Amazon) is certain to delight and inform a new generation of artists and scientists. Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours is a charming artifact from the golden age of natural history and global exploration.

In the late eighteenth century, mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner devised a standardized color scheme that allowed him to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who used the actual minerals described by Werner to create the color charts in the book, enhancing them with examples from flora and fauna.

In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured via the written word, and scientific observers could not afford ambiguity in their descriptions. Werner’s handbook became an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature during his seminal voyage on the HMS Beagle. Werner’s terminology lent both precision and lyricism to Darwin’s pioneering writings, enabling his readers to envision a world they would never see.

Also visit Nicholas Rougeux‘s site to see a recreation of the original color guidebook with new cross references, photographic examples, and posters.

Nuts and Bolts: Give Your Low to No Sellers a Facelift III

Nuts & Bolts – Give Your Low to No Sellers a Facelift III

Do you have some cards that have been hanging around for a while with low to no sales? Putting a fresh touch on low performing cards that you’re not 100% happy with is a good idea.

Here is a wonderful example of a re-worked card by artist Stephanie Laird, dedicated to improvement, marketability and attention to detail.  She is continually turning a critical eye to her own work to make improvements:

BEFORE:

Her editing comments:
I updated the above pid.  I cleaned up the image and added more contrast and stronger lines so it would print better, at least I think it will. I changed the inside too.  Could you please take a look and see if this is acceptable?  This cover image is on two other cards, if this is okay I would like to change the cover on the other two as well.
AFTER:

As always, thank you, Stephanie for always raising the bar on your own creations and working with the review team in the process of your card makeovers.

Here is a related guest post by Stephanie on Updating Old to No / Low Selling Cards.  And some Facelifts for Old Cards examples from artist Doreen Erhardt of Salon of Art and her storewide facelift.

And some tips on improving cards, Change or New Submission.

TIP: Changing the image of an approved card does carry some risk as the review team does not give it a once over.  If you are changing images on approved cards you are welcome to send an email to the review team with a list of pid#s and ask them for a review.  A second set of eyes never hurts.  If intending to update a like-image collection we suggest you update only one card first and have the review team give it a review before proceeding with the balance.  This will save you time and grief in case your edits to not meet the Submission Guidelines.

  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.

Wanted New Cards: Wedding Welcome Bag

September 27, 2018

wanted new cards head

Wanted Cards – Wedding Welcome Bag

There are some wedding traditions that will never change, perhaps the exchange of the rings and vows.  But there are always new traditions and tokenary touches that make the day even more special (and expensive!).

It is becoming common for the bride and groom to greet the arrival of their wedding party and even wedding guests with a Wedding Welcome Bag.  This is especially true for destination weddings with a majority of out of town travelers and multiple planned events.  The bags contain local and personal items with event itinerary, maps and a personal note of thanks.

Please consider creating cards to the bride and groom can include in their Wedding Welcome Bags.  Since it’s customary for these to be highly personalized, we strongly suggest creating custom front designs.  Consider popular wedding themes (beach, bohemian, winter wonderland, state specific, etc.).

If you are not familiar with Wedding Welcome Bags do a little research online to see what they are all about and how brides and grooms are assembling them to make their special day even more special.  Here’s a glimpse per Martha Stewart Weddings

We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using the Stock Cards function (Bigstock) or your own graphic designs.

Remember, when you’re submitting your new card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers. Be inventive,  be clever, be creative. Go for it!
