Wanted New Cards: Coronavirus / COVID-19

Wanted Cards – Coronavirus / COVID-19

First we would like to send a message of support and concern to all of our artists to be safe and healthy. We find having an entire artist community of mobile workers and online shoppers comforting in a time of chaos.  GCU HQ employees are working remotely.  And as of today, our printing partners are still in production. Of course, conditions can change from one day to the next.

Not to make light of a very serious situation, but levity goes a long way in easing anxiety, stress, and worry.  This may also be a good creative outlet for artists to express your support, perspective, compassion, frustrations, humor, etc.

An interesting read:

We’d like to put a call out for any cards that are Coronavirus themed.  They all should reside here that will serve as a catch-all category.  Shoppers will find them via search so your keywords and titles will be key:
Collections >> Health Awareness >> Coronavirus / COVID 19

Consider occasions like Get Well, Miss You, Thinking of You, Birthday, Anniversary, hygiene awareness, quarantine, social distancing, TP shortage … you name it.

Please use good taste, submissions found to be offensive or racist will not be approved.
Submit these cards for FastTrack review. We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using your own graphic designs or Stock Card Creations.  Be sure to leave a note in the Note to Reviewers like “requested on the blog”.

Remember, when you’re submitting your new Stock Card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers. Be inventive, be colorful, be clever, be creative.

Thank you, stay safe and healthy!

Nuts & Bolts – Vehicle Trade Dress Edits

March 6, 2020

Nuts & Bolts – Vehicle Trade Dress Edits

One of the many things that card reviewers look for is Intellectual Property.  One piece of IP is trademarks.  In particular, vehicles like cars, motorcycles and others.  Not only can the make and model names not be used in card metadata, but also defining emblems, body lines, and telltale shapes. This falls into the legal protection of Trade Dress.

GCU has set the guide for vehicles that are not considered “antiques’ (read 1920s and 1930s) to be rendered generic, partial, and/or abstract in nature.

Here is an excellent recent example of artist, Alda Monteschio of Heart Tugs, modifying what originally looked to be a VW Bus to a more generic vehicle which passes review.

Original Card:

Reviewer request:
MARKETABILITY – Intellectual Property – Volkswagen
See the GCU Blog for explanation & examples:
https://gcucommunity.com/2013/09/23/dash-of-inspiration-intellectual-property/

Elements of this image infringe on copyrighted, trademarked and licensed materials. Specifically, cards that contain references to or images of Volkswagen vehicles cannot be sold on Greeting Card Universe. This includes the manufacturer’s trade dress rights which bars the use of any silhouette, picture, caricature, or reproduction of the shape or appearance of the manufacturer’s vehicle.Car image cards must be abstract or partial in nature so even the defining body lines and profile can not be identified. This is due to Trade Dress laws. Antique/Vintage cars of the 20s and 30s will be considered with a softer eye ie: Model-T but still must not contain any logos, emblems, make & model names.

Note: The split windshield was an identifiable feature of the VW van. Please remove that feature.  Additionally, the text is too soft to print well as it lacks clarity. Please adjust.

Resulting Card:

Thank you, Alda for the great edits resulting in a card that is ready to take the high road!

Wanted New Cards: Tie-Dye Party Invitations.

March 5, 2020

Wanted Cards – Tie-Dye Party Invitations

Tie-dye is not just for hippies, Deadheads and summer campers.  There is a resurgence and annual twist on tie-dye seen in fashion and home decor.  Following that trend are tie-dye themed parties.  Not 60s, 70s or hippie themed, just focused on the colorful DIY style. Typically at these parties guests, of course, make tie-dyed items!
Please consider creating new cards for these new categories:

The difference between the latter two categories above is the style of the age range (kids vs adults).
We’d like you to create at least one card for these categories using the Stock Cards function or your own graphic designs.  Be sure to leave a note in the Note to Reviewers like “requested on the blog”.

Remember, when you’re submitting your new Stock Card, add a little note about the intended category in your Notes to Reviewers. Be inventive, be colorful, be clever, be creative. Good luck!
