Nuts and Bolts: English Translation in Artist’s Notes

January 27, 2017

Nuts & Bolts – English Translation in Artist’s Notes

As our foreign language cards become more popular, we have received many calls from shoppers asking for English translations of specific inner verses.  In many cases the person purchasing the card does not speak the language and is sending it to someone who does.  So, they need your help!

We suggest for foreign language cards that you include an English translation in the Artist Notes field.  In fact, the review team will require this.  It helps shoppers know what your cover and inside verse says.  We strongly suspect that cards with a translation are more likely to be purchased than those without.

A wonderfully crafted example of Artist’s Notes for this French Sympathy card by Doreen Erhardt of Salon of Art:

Artist’s Notes:
Deep purple rose bloom sympathy card for the loss of a father in the French language. Card front translates to: “We were disturbed and saddened by the death of your father.” Inside reads; “Our thoughts are with you and your family at this most difficult time of loss.” Both the card front and inside French Language text may be personalized by you at the time of purchase.

Wanted New Cards: Sports Shutout Congratulations

January 26, 2017

Wanted Cards – Sports Shutout Congratulations

There are many different highlights in a sporting event and individual player accolades to be celebrated.  Many of these are often bestowed on players that score.  An often unheralded player is the one that prevents the scoring – the keeper!

Consider creating sport specific congratulations cards for a keeper (goalkeeper, goalie, or goaltender) on a shutout (SO or no score).  When creating cards consider gender neutral designs as well as for male and female athletes.

Custom Corner: Happy Holidays Across the Miles

January 13, 2017
Once again Mindy Rosso-Gaemi, GCU Co-Founder and Community Manager, has set forth to create a highly personalize, one of a kind holiday card.  With a long time passion for greeting cards it is a highlight of her holidays to send a fun and meaningful card.

Custom Corner – Happy Holidays Across the Miles

Mindy has shared the following about the creation of her 2016 holiday card:

I’m a glass half full kind of gal.  Seeing the bright side of things seems to be my disposition, usually.  When socializing with friends and family and being updated on little happens each day or life’s bigger events, I find myself sharing a sentiment of “it will all work out” or “they’ll find their way” or “consider it a gift”.

I certainly have had many little and big things in my life that have not gone as planned.  My visual of these “detours” and “U-turns” is that of taking the scenic route.  This makes whatever the deviation is ok and actually a welcomed change if you choose to embrace it.  At least that’s how I see it.  I wanted to share this sentiment in my holiday card knowing it would resonate with many. So there was my theme – Taking Life’s Scenic Route.  And here is how the other elements came into place …

Santa’s Road Trip
While cyber-Monday shopping I came across the adorable Pottery Barn Christmas pillow that spoke to me so loudly.  The adorable design of Santa and Rudolph crammed into a car together along with plate “heartXMAS” was irresistible.  Aha, Santa has his own journey, a Christmas road trip!

unnamed

2017 or Bust
One of my many favorite sayings is “(insert any destination) or Bust”.  Maybe because I’m a Californian and fondly remember learning in school about the California Gold Rush with prospectors risking everything to travel West to find their fortunes.  I say it whenever possible (it really annoys my kids) especially when we’re on a roadtrip, “Santa Cruz or Bust”, “Newport or Bust” even “College or Bust” or “Whole Foods or Bust”. It was natural for me to include “2017 or Bust” as part of our journey to the new year.

Joy Ride
The design clearly had to be travel, transportation or vehicle oriented.  It would be fun if this vehicle wrote a word in the snow like tire tracks.  I just didn’t know what word yet.  Hmmm, what would Santa write?  Joy of course since he’s on a Joy Ride!  I don’t think kids say this anymore, probably because they don’t do it, thank goodness!  When I was younger you could actually go on a joy ride (not that I ever did) and not get arrested for it.  Today the consequences would be very different.

Now I needed an artist willing to whip up a design just 18 short and frazzled days before Christmas.  When thinking of a card design to match this theme I recalled Gerda Steiner’s adorable Teamwork card depicting Santa and holiday friends pulling on a rope towing Santa’s gift laden sleigh.  I liked the idea of Santa’s sled breaking down but the show must go on.

I shared the concept with Gerda and worried I may have scared her off with my random vision and short deadline.  After promising that I would make it as painless as possible and asking her to sleep on it, she couldn’t get it out of her head and whipped up her adorable Scooter Santa.  “Across the Miles” seemed to be a fitting cover verse to start the adventure.

I had a few family photos to choose from but I knew the one with my three girls in the snow would work best.  Apologies to Nasser and Thumbelina for not making it on the card this year!  And of course I always have the longest inside verse ever which makes space challenging and extra care to mind the fold line.
unnamed4
Miles of thanks to Gerda for riding shotgun on this project with me!  She was delightful to work with, brimming with inspired ideas and uber efficient.  I am grateful and so pleased with the finished design.

Here’s what Gerda had to say about the designing process:

When Mindy contacted me, if I would consider to design the Christmas Card for her and her family, I was quite thrilled. It was already the beginning of December which worked out great because there was no time to procrastinate. lol!

Mindy mentioned in her email that she pictured a ‘Joyride’ theme and a Santa on a Scooter was instantly grooming so loud through my mind that I had to sketch a rough drawing of that guy right away. A rough sketch that I sent to Mindy to see if we’re somewhat on one page and luckily she seemed to like where I was going. Yippee …  did not have a plan B! Mindy had a couple of more ideas and suggestions for  the outside of the card so that we finished that part first. For the inside of the card she sent the inside verse and a picture of her lovely daughters and I made sure to keep the inside in the same color theme as the outside. We added two pictures from two Greeting Cards that I’ve posted on GCU a while back and the inside of the card filled up rather fast. The picture that Mindy provided was actually perfect, as the ‘girls’ are sitting in the snow and it was easy to change the background to the cartoon style background. The inside verse was quite a lot of text and I had to choose a rather small font and due to the text amount and size one that was fairly easy to read. It all worked out in the end and I thank you Mindy for the opportunity to design those Christmas Cards for you and your family. 😉
