Nuts and Bolts: Show Us Your Studio

November 18, 2016

Nuts & Bolts – Show Us Your Studio!

Where do you work?  Is it a formal studio with a tidy desk and color sequenced tools or uncontrolled colorful chaos?  Perhaps a cozy couch with a four footed muse nearby.  Maybe it’s a rogue studio – moving based on your mood or seasonal window view.

Wherever you settle your creative self … let’s see your spot!
Post a photo of your studio or the inspiring view from your studio on one or both of the following social media outlets.

Instagram, in your post tag @GreetingCardUniverse and use the hashtag #mystudio

Pinterest, in your pin description tag @GCUniverse

It will be fun to see the variety and perhaps many common elements among our GCU artists.

Be sure to read our prior post on Getting Social on Instagram and Be a Pinner.

Tip: be sure to follow GCU on Instagram and Pinterest.  See what GCU is posting and pinning – it just might be one of YOUR cards!

Nuts & Bolts – Dedicate Yourself to the Details

Sometimes you’re so close to your work that you can’t see an alternative or different perspective.  In come the GCU reviewers with fresh eyes.  They may suggest something that you haven’t thought of yet.

Here is a wonderful example of a re-worked card by GCU artist Shoaff Ballanger Studios.  Dedicated to improvement and open to the reviewer’s suggestion of

“please consider adjusting the image so that the figure is facing to the right where the card opens. Thanks!”, Shoaff Ballanger Studios great trumpet blowing design got even better
and is sure to be a solid seller this holiday season!

Nuts and Bolts: Re-purpose for Quick Designs

November 4, 2016

Nuts & Bolts – Re-purpose for Quick Designs

Wanted Cards get posted on both GCU’s Community Blog and on the forum.  Shopper’s expectations are set at seeing new cards for their requests within 2 business days.  Whoa, that’s quick!  Too quick for you to pull something together?  Perhaps not.  Consider re-purposing a concept or elements of a design from one of your already approved cards vs starting from scratch.

There are two ways to go about this for the request:
1. A general design used as a template that you can customize per request:

Example, Teri Nelson Kuster of Che Bella Nota’s Graduation Scroll can be customized for just about any degree or discipline:

General:

congratulations-on-graduating-with-rolled-diploma-and-mortar-cardPharmacist:

graduation-congratulations-for-pharmacist-with-diploma-card-1235536Police Officer:

graduation-congratulations-for-police-officer-scroll-and-1061243

2. A specific element in a design that can used in a new design
Example, Gail Pepin’s “elephant” which she’s used for several custom requested cards:

Christmas:
christmas-elephant-theme-presents-tree-holly-card-1435778
Circus Camp:
thinking-of-you-circus-camp-elephant-clown-card-1437884
Thanksgiving:
custom-thanksgiving-elephant-theme-turkey-card-1445074
and another example of Gail’s great re-purposing of “books” from her Librarian Birthday card for the Study Abroad custom request:
custom-name-librarian-s-birthday-bookworm-card-1389742

custom-name-bon-voyage-studying-abroad-globe-card-1391898

TIP: You can use the power of search to help you pinpoint possibilities.  Search your own cards in Manage Cards via Find Specific Cards by Keywords to find occasions or specific elements you’re looking for.

Important to note:  Be sure when you submit a new card that is based on an existing approved card to include in your Notes to Reviewer the pid# for the reviewers’ quick and easy reference.  This moves the review along for you and all other artists!  For example: “this card is based on prior approved card pid#123456”.

So, don’t feel like you have to create a new design from the ground up in 48 hours for a Wanted Cards request.  Look to your own trove of existing designs and elements to come up with something new to meet the shopper’s needs.

The difference is made in the details!

Wanted Cards – Employee Holiday Bonus

Year-end, holiday bonuses by employers is certainly something most employees look forward to. Bonuses are considered an important perk for employees during the holiday shopping season, or simply a way to help workers make ends meet or even just a gesture of gratitude to their workers during the holiday season, if only for the sake of employee morale and increased job loyalty.
