Congratulations to both of you! Your beautiful cards are a welcome addition to the GCU marketplace, as are all the entries this month. Many thanks to each of you for participating and making this another fun and incredibly creative challenge!

……………………………………………………………

As our judges get to work today on judging April’s challenge, we are ready to kick off our new May Design Challenge …

Theme: National & International JUNE Days

Requirements:

  • The Day you create a card for must be from this list of Days of the Year https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/2016/06/
  • Text and/or inside verse must speak to the Day in June you’ve chosen and you need to represent the reason behind the ‘holiday’, so do your research to understand why the day you chose is celebrated and what the message is they wish to get across.
  • Create a card which accurately reflects the unique qualities of these unusual ‘holidays’ by visually creating imagery which ties to the Day to celebrate and your message together.

NOTE: Some of you have been working on these new categories already. IF you have created a card which was approved within the last 30-days for one of these Days in June, you may enter that card into the challenge.

……………………………………………………………

Entry Deadline: Tuesday, May 31st

……………………………………………………………

How to Enter: Post the PID (card number) and the URL (public storefront link – please WAIT for the card to be available in the public marketplace, please DO NOT post a link to your Manage Cards area) as a post in the challenge blog. We’ll forward your entry to the jury.

……………………………………………………………….

Category: Holidays > National & International Days Cards (http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/holidays/nationalandinternationaldays)

Remember ONLY new cards for JUNE DAYS are eligible for entry.

GCU is adding these Days of the Year as fast as they can, so if the day you choose in the month of June is not listed in the category list yet, then choose OTHER (http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/holidays/nationalandinternationaldays/other)

and REQUEST the new category in your Notes to Reviewer when you submit the card by clearly stating: Created for May 2016 Challenge – please consider adding “Upsy Daisy Day” to the National & International Days categories here is the link: https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/upsy-daisy-day/

Also, please note your request for a new category to fill this challenge in the forum announcement for the May 2016 challenge – this gives Mindy a central place to look for all the new category requests to fill this challenge.

……………………………………………………………….

Rules:

  • Submission must meet GCU’s Submission Guidelines and be Approved through the usual Review Cycle– Fast Track your submission with this in the Notes to Reviewer: May Design Challenge Submission here is the link to the blog post: (include THIS blog post URL)
  • Only ONE card per artist per challenge.
  • Submissions must be NEW, no existing designs.
  • Your entry must meet the Challenge Requirements and Theme or it will not be included in the challenge.
  • Stock Card Creations entries will not be accepted.

……………………………………………………………………

BLIND Judging: We hope each of you enters every month. Entries are submitted anonymously for judging by the GCU Challenge Jury which means that before and during the challenge, judges do not have any way of knowing what artist is behind each entry. This eliminates any and all concerns with ‘favoritism’. Results will post on the Community Blog. The jury will judge the entries on the following criteria:

  • How well the card meets the Challenge Requirements and Theme.
  • How well the card speaks to the Category the artist chooses for the card submission.
  • Creativity, Execution and Marketability.

……………………………………………………………………

Winners: 1st Place:

  • The winning designer’s card and store will be featured on the GCU Public Blog – the blog which customers view and follow.
  • As well as featured on the GCU Public Facebook Page – nearly 30,000 followers, now THAT’S exposure!
  • The winning card will be Design of the Day following the announcement of the winners (within 48-hours).

EXCEPTION: Horizontal (landscape) cards may not be featured as DOD due to GCU Home Page space restrictions. In these cases, GCU will choose a different vertically oriented card from your store to feature as DOD. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for this limitation.

  • The winning card will be added to the Greeting Card Universe Design Challenge Winners Pinterest Board currently GCU’s Pinterest Page followers: 1.4K!
  • The winning card, should the artist choose, may be referenced in a new series by the winning artist and he/she may Fast Track all cards in the new series (being sure to give the Challenge URL and winning card PID in your Notes to Reviewer for each card in this series).

Nuts and Bolts: Change or New Submission

April 29, 2016

Nuts & Bolts – Change or New Submission

There are times and reasons to update an existing card design.  It can be tricky to know when to update the image on an existing card and when to create and submit a new one.  Here are some helpful GCU’s guidelines.

Changes or Edits to an Existing Card’s Image are Only Permitted to:
a) Correct an error – correct a typo, fix a margin allowance, remove artist credits, etc.

b) Improve the original design using similar elements as the original design and retaining the original design’s main elements, style, and tone.

c) Update the design to reflect relevant Year – most common on Graduation, Christmas, New Year, Reunion cards.

The Following Changes to an Existing Card’s Image are NOT Permitted and Should Instead be Submitted as a NEW Card:

1. Design changes that result in a new category and/or new occasion and/or new elements featured in the design
2. New design featuring elements and overall style/tone not evident or not in the spirit of the original design

GCU has some very specific guidelines for updating Chinese New Year cards:

Chinese zodiac specific designs are the strongest selling Chinese New Year (CNY) cards on GCU. For this reason GCU will discriminate card and category approvals of Chinese New Year (CNY) cards. Only zodiac specific designs will be approved under the zodiac specific categories (ie: Holidays >> Chinese New Year >> Year of the Monkey, etc.). The front of the card must have zodiac specific image and / or text.  Cards that are also year specific (ie: 2016) on the front or inside will be approved under the appropriate subcategory (ie:  Holidays >> Chinese New Year >> Year of the Monkey >> Year Specific, etc.).

CNY cards that are NOT zodiac specific in the front design will be approved under the appropriate “general” category. This includes many of the universal symbols of the holiday (bamboo, koi, tea, fruit, firecrackers, red envelopes, etc.).  If the card has year specific content (ie: 2016) or the zodiac is addressed on the inside verse only these cards will be approved in Holidays >> Chinese New Year >> Year Specific.

Note: The Dragon is the only zodiac animal sign GCU will considered as a universal symbol of the holiday and permitted to be used outside of its zodiac year (Year of the Dragon).
You CAN update the year on CNY cards, both zodiac and non-zodiac specific cards, see permitted examples:

You CANNOT update a Year of the Monkey design to a Year of the Ox design for example.  Instead you should create and submit a new card(s).

Additional Considerations & Tips:

Changing the image of an approved card does carry some risk as the review team does not give it a once over.  If you are changing images on approved cards you are welcome to send an email to the review team with a list of pid#s and ask them for a review.  A second set of eyes never hurts.  If intending to update a like-image collection we suggest you update only one card first and have the review team give it a review before proceeding with the balance.  This will save you time and grief in case your edits to not meet the Submission Guidelines.

The review team is also happy to return cards to you for edits on request.  So if you know you are doing some minor makeovers these cards can be taken offline until your changes are made and resubmitted for re-review.

Remember to use the Note to Reviewer field on cards you are resubmitting with updated images noting the changes you’ve made so we’re all on the same page.

Lastly, re-think making changes to strong selling cards. Maybe you feel the need to freshen them up. Don’t ruin a good thing!  Leave it alone and instead create a new card.  You just might end up with two strong sellers.

Why is GCU so picky about this?  Here are some considerations that make this important:

GCU needs to maintain consistency of design to the product id #, it should reflect the same card over time so shoppers coming back for a specific card can find that design. Minor improvements and edits are acceptable and encouraged but major design changes will cause confusion for shoppers and may result in lost sales for repeat orders.

We encourage you to create new designs. This expands your opportunity for sales, you will have established designs available for repeat orders and new designs will offer further sales opportunities!

Rainbow Connection: What Your Color Choices Say

April 26, 2016

Rather than bring you a color palette or two today, I wanted to talk about color as a whole. Did you know the color choices you make in your designs can have an effect on a shopper’s decision to buy or not to buy?

For example, what color would you choose for a four year old girl’s birthday – black, lavender, or soft yellow? If you picked black or lavender, you probably won’t sell very many of these cards.

Below, you’ll find a brief chart outlining some of the meanings of basic colors that can influence shoppers. The colors you choose in your designs are just as important as the designs themselves, so I hope this will help you make appropriate choices for the message you’re trying to send.

Have fun!

Nuts and Bolts: Homework Always Pays Off

April 22, 2016

Nuts & Bolts: Homework Always Pays Off
Part of making a marketable card is finding a way to creatively reflect the occasion or holiday that will resonate with shoppers.  If it is an occasion or holiday that you are not familiar with it’s important to take the time to do a little research.  If you are familiar with the occasion or holiday more research can be helpful to find new inspiration.

There is an endless source of information online to learn about occasions and holidays – customs, symbols, religion, origins, colors, terminology, trends, etc.  Wiki pages are a great place to start.  You can quickly glean a list of important elements to incorporate into your design, verse, title, keywords and artist notes.  Become your own subject matter expert.  If you are not interested or willing to do the homework then do not create for the occasion.

The review team has seen some cards that have not only nothing to do with the holiday but also embarrassingly designs / sentiments that are incorrect and could be offensive.  We’ve seen dreidels on Bat Mitzvah cards.
Hajj Mubarak, Congratulations on Islamic Pilgrimage to Mecca card 2016-04-22 18-57-51
Here are some examples of occasions that are not what they may seem:

Veterans Day is an official United States pubic holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Memorial Day is on the last Monday in May. Formerly known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who lost their lives as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

Don’t Confuse the Two:  Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service

Patriot Day observed in the United States as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, occurs on September 11 of each year in memory of the people killed in the 2001 September 11 attacks.
Patriots’ Day is an official state holiday in Massachusetts and Wisconsin commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War.

Here is a helpful, related post about designing for different cultures:

So do try something new, step out of your comfort zone, but do your homework first and have fun as you learn something new!  A little extra time on the front end will result in approved cards and sales on the back end.
